John(Richard Gere)是一位中年律师，他的生活很完美，关心他的妻子，两个孩子，但似乎又缺少着什么，而他每次乘地铁回家的时候，总是习惯性的抬头看着那家舞蹈学校的窗户。也许是中年疲惫的心态吧，每天过着同样的生活，忍不住去找挖掘些生命中的激情，有人选择了婚外情，但他却终于鼓气勇气走进了那家舞蹈学校并认识了Pualina(Jlo)。在酒吧John和同学说着学跳舞的种种好处，找着各种借口，但不约而同的还是避开了彼此的目光。经历了种种，John终于发现学舞的目的并不是为了Pualina，而是为了寻找生命的热情，寻找生命的希望。Pualina也知道了对舞伴的信任才是跳舞的真谛，并走出了失败的阴影。而John终于迈出了那一步，轻声说到：“shall we dance？”
