Retired NBC Universal executive Paula Williams Madison and her brothers, Elrick and Howard Williams, were raised in Harlem, New York, by their Chinese Jamaican mother, Nell Vera Lowe. To fulfill a promise to their mother to connect with her estranged father's people, they embark on a journey to uncover their ancestral roots.
Paula, Elrick and Howard travel to a Hakka Chinese conference in Toronto, where they meet members of the Chinese Jamaican community and learn more about their grandfather. After that, the siblings and 16 of their family members wind up traveling to Shenzhen and Guangzhou to visit their family’s ancestral village, a bookend to a story above familial love and devotion that transcends race, space and time.
