INTRODUCTION TO
THE FOURTH TORONTO HAKKA CONFERENCE
JUNE 28-JULY 1, 2012
The three previous Hakka conferences held in 2000, 2004 and 2008 have established the Toronto Hakka Conference (THC) as the premier learning event for Hakka people world-wide. In consistency and quality, it surpasses similar events held anywhere, including China and Taiwan. The fourth THC, scheduled for June 29-July 1, 2012, will put this claim beyond a doubt.
Our model of collaboration between the university and the community is unique, as is the sponsorship of the event by Hakka or Hakka-related organizations. Although it is a complex model, it has proven not only to be cost-effective but also to provide the maximum of benefits to all the collaborating parties. Our university partner has expressed greater recognition of this partnership as we approach THC2012.
THC2012 will deal with (1) the dynamism of Hakka in modern China and East Asia, (2) the exciting research findings of recent years, and (3) the potential of cultural growth among Hakka youth through global communications.
Our university partner will be East Asian Studies Centre, York University, the director of which is Prof. Gordon Anderson. He has booked space in Vari Hall -- the auditorium and several classrooms. Rental is a contribution by York University, but we have to pay fees for audiovisual equipment and technicians.......................
