<br>Laurent Sagart was born in March 1951 in Paris. He received his primary and secondary schooling in Périgueux and Paris, and a MA in Chinese from University Paris 7. In 1977-78 he was a foreign student at the Beijing Language Institute and Nanjing University (Department of Chinese). He completed his PhD dissertation "Le dialecte Hakka de Sung Him Tong, Hongkong" in 1977 (University of Paris 7) and his Doctorat d’Etat "les dialectes Gan" in 1990 (University of Aix-Marseille 1).
