The Hakkas in Brunei (汶萊)
Brunei is a goldleaf, dome-dominated realm - Islam and gentle.
It is an independent country although it is locked into Sabah and Sarawak,
the two states of Malaysia.
According to the report by 饒堪光 (Rao Kan Guang), the president of the Hakka Association of Brunei, to the 15th Hakka World Convention held in Kuala Lumpur
in November 1999, the following table shows the increment of the Chinese population (1911 to 1991) in Brunei:
1911==736
1921==1,423
1931==2,683
1947==8,300
1960==21,795
1971==31,925
1981==39,461
1991==40,621
Currently, the Hakka population in Brunei is about 4 thousand.[转贴者翻译:1999年文莱大约有4000余的客家人]Most of the Hakkas are the offspring of Baoan (寶安), JieYang or Hopo (揭陽 or 河婆), Dapu (大埔) and Wuhua (五華) (very few from 梅縣 Meixian).[The full report is in Chinese]
The only Hakka Association in Brunei is:

There are two Chinese high schools in Brunei;
中華中學 (Chinese High Scool) and 中正中學 (Chiang Kai-shek High school?)
in Seria. The founders of the school were 沈人史 (Shen Renshi), 饒梓琳 (Rao Zilin),
楊志善 (Yang Zhishan), 劉興琴 (Liu Xingqin) and 鐘撥卿 (Zhong Boqing)
There is a town called 水上村 Kampong Ayer (Water Village) built on the water.
Perhaps Erik can tell us more about this Water Village.
