This conference aims to educate persons of Chinese and Hakka Chinese descent in retaining and adapting their
traditional culture. It is cosponsored by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute of New York University, and is open
to all interested persons, including students and staff of New York University.

Feature presentation by MOCA, VP Records and Caribbean Food Delights -Chinese contribution to
Jamaican/Caribbean music is exemplified by the Nation Music of Jamaica’s Byron Lee. Starting a mento and
calypso group in high school, Byron grew this group into a big dance band, the Dragonaires, which held sway over
four decades in Jamaica and the Caribbean, as well as in the diaspora cities of London, Miami, New York, and
Toronto. From ska to rock steady to reggae and soca, mambo and chachacha, Byron reproduced the international
signature music of the Caribbean.

On retiring as an executive of NBC and General Electric, Harlem born Paula Madison began actively to search for
the Chinese side of her family from which the Jamaican side was separated for almost nine decades. She travelled
to the Toronto Hakka Conference in 2012, and found the threads that led her back to China to be reunited with her
family of some two hundred generation.

Dr. Keith Lowe, cofounder of the Toronto Hakka Conference, provides an introduction to the Chinese clan and its
system of names. Like Paula Madison, he is a 23rd generation Luo/Lowe; he uses their family tree to illustrate
traditional Chinese lineage.

Robert Hew of the cemetery team of the Chinese Benevolent Association of Jamaica describes the restoration of
the cemetery that was abandoned for about four decades. Records have been translated and carried over to a data
base which reveal the clan village of one’s ancestors the starting point for constructing the family tree.

Writer Alexandra Lee moderates a panel consisting of business leaders Vincent Ho Sang of New York, and
Jamaica’s Butch Hendrickson, Vincent Chang, Dalton Yap. The Ho Sang family is the USA’s largest producer of
Caribbean frozen foods, distributed by Walmart etc. From a platform of bakeries, the Hendrickson family created a
benchmark conglomerate of farming, hotels, etc.

Dr. Samuel Lowe assesses the extent to which Hakka were agents of change in modern China, through their
strong participation in political and military affairs. They led the Taiping rebellion, fought with Sun Yat Sen
and Mao Tse Tung, and were driven by a similar passion for justice as the peasant army of 16th century Europe.

villas of northeast Guangdong and the rectangular compounds of southern Guangdong loom large in the built
landscape. They provide profound lessons for tomorrow’s habitats.

Room 102 HAKKA MIGRATIONS客家的迁徙
Rafeek Ellias’ film, Legend of Fat Mama, tells the story of the historic Chinatown in Kolkata, India. It is a very
poignant depiction of Hakka settlement and dispersal. Migrating from north of the Yellow River to the southern
coasts of China, the Hakka or “guest people” went overseas to Taiwan and Southeast Asia and then to the Americas
and the Caribbean. The only Chinese ethnic group that never adopted female foot binding, the 800 million Hakka
have touched down in every corner of the globe.

descendants of the Chinese have done far more than their share in spreading Caribbean music around the world.
The Chin family migrated from Jamaica to New York with their pioneering record business and made it the
largest purveyor of Jamaica’s global music.

Marie Lee Loy of Ryerson University introduces an autobiography by another returnee from China.

Easton Lee reads poems and stories from his many books based on a lifetime spent developing Jamaican culture
from the village square to the international stage. Prof. Anne Marie Lee Loy leads a discussion on Easton’s place
in Caribbean writing and performances.

The lunar New Year and lantern festival are celebrated in traditional style in Dunshang or Little
Hill, a dragon -backed oval village of the Lowe clan in the Meixien region. Keith Gimsang Lowe
screens videotapes of the events. Teng Teng Kleiner demonstrates how to make lei-cha, a food
which served the arduous journeys made by the Hakka.
